Coffee scores carry the potential to give farmers vital information about the health of their plants and how to sell their coffee. But the impact of coffee scores on local economies and the environment can vary depending on access, education, and communication of scores throughout the coffee supply and consumption chain.
Sustainability
At Urnex, our approach to sustainability is rooted in delivering meaningful improvements to the well-being of our environment, stakeholders, and the coffee industry worldwide. We have and will continue to implement measures across our organization to utilize safer and more sustainable ingredients, reduce packaging and production waste, conserve water and energy, and support social and economic growth within our organization and communities.
Our 3 Pillars of Sustainability
PRODUCT
STEWARDSHIP
We elevate our products by using safer, gentler ingredients and more sustainable packaging components and production processes
MANUFACTURING
FOOTPRINT
We utilize equipment and implement processes that reduce our water usage, lower waste water output and conserve energy in our facilities
EMPLOYEES &
COMMUNITIES
We take pride in our service, support and commitment to our employees and communities
Product Stewardship
We carefully consider what chemicals we use to make our products. Plant-based ingredients are used whenever possible and capable of achieving the desired cleaning objective for the intended application or piece of equipment.
Our chemists and scientists who evaluate the risk and toxicity of individual components that make up a formula and analyze how these components will react when combined. This is done through extensive research: we identify potential hazards throughout the supply stream, isolate compounds that could be hazardous, and develop new formulas that can perform well while still reducing our environmental footprint.
Our Environmental Footprint
An example of how we act to minimize waste and our impact on the environment is our focus on tablets as a core product format.
We have decades of experience manufacturing tablets, and apply our extensive knowledge both for the benefit of our customers - many of whose machines depend on tablets of a specific shape, size, dissolution rate, and chemical formulation to perform a specific cleaning task - as well as for the good of the environment.
Compared to liquids, which are often easier and cheaper to produce, tablets allow for significant weight reduction per dose. When shipping containers of product from our New York facility to our customers or warehouses in Asia or Europe, the efficiency of a tablet makes a meaninfgul difference in shipping weight while providing our customers with more usable product.
For example, a single jar of 40, 10 gram milk cleaning tablets weighs half of a kilogram and makes 40 liters of cleaning solution. Our equivalent liquid milk cleaner in a 1 liter bottle makes just 33 liters of cleaning solution and weights 1.1 kilograms - more than twice as much as the 40 tablet jar. By focusing much of our business on tablets and powders, our partners don't have to order from us as often, and we cut back on energy expended during transport.
Our Employees & Communities
We actively partner with individuals and organizations to support the coffee community through a wide range of activities, programs and resources. Our current and past support includes organizations whose missions focus on improving diversity and inclusivity, environmental sustainability, education and training, and the mental health of coffee professionals.

Biocaf: For the Good of Coffee
When considering our impact on the environment, every participant in the coffee journey has a choice to make. At origin, farmers consider how to sustainably harvest and process their green coffee, and buyers assess their sourcing decisions. At the café, managers evaluate whether to carry dairy milk vs. non-dairy alternatives, and baristas consider ways to save leftover batch brewer coffee. And the coffee consumer contemplates whether to enjoy their coffee in a reusable porcelain mug or take it to-go in a paper cup and plastic lid.
At Urnex, we have asked the same question of ourselves: what can we do as a member of the coffee community to reduce our environmental footprint, protect our planet and inspire others to do the same?
Biocaf is our range of coffee equipment cleaners that are 100% biodegradable, are sourced from plants and minerals, and are free of phosphates. With Biocaf, we are able to provide coffee professionals with cleaning products designed to have minimal impact on the environment while still ensuring they help them serve great tasting coffee from the cleanest equipment.

The Biocaf Sustainability Series
We seek to do more than just help our customers take better care of their equipment with more sustainable cleaners in recyclable packaging. We want to inspire the coffee community to think critically about all the ways it can play its part in protecting the environment.
That's why we have partnered with several enormously talented, thoughtful and eloquent coffee writers to launch the Biocaf Sustainability Series. The goal of this series is to highlight some of the most creative and effective efforts from across the coffee value chain to preserve our environment, and to help lead the conversation of finding a more responsible path forward to taking care of our planet.
