What is your current occupation and employer?
I have my own business, the Mas Café in Puebla. We roast coffee and sell many products for coffee shops.
When did you know you wanted to turn your passion for coffee into a career?
The first time I drank a specialty coffee directly on a coffee plantation, its complexity seemed wonderful. When I saw the hard work of the producers, I realized that coffee would be my life.
What’s the best piece of coffee-related advice you’ve received?
That the real heroes of all this culture are the producers and the people in the field.
Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
In my business, along with my family, learning more about coffee and helping more people fall in love with it.
How many coffees did you taste before choosing one for the national competition in Germany?
I visited many farms and tried many cups of coffee from many types of coffee seeds., I tried no less than 10 different varieties.
List all the national and world coffee competitions have you competed in.
- 2011 5th place in the Mexican barista championship.
- 2013 3rd place in the Mexican barista championship.
- 2015 3rd place in the Mexican barista championship.
- 2016 1st place in the Mexican barista championship.
What is the reaction you receive when you tell someone outside the coffee community that you are a champion barista competitor?
Many people do not know about the existence of the competition, but everyone asks and they are interested on the subject. They seem curious and they congratulate me for the title.

Cafiza is my favorite product. I think it is the best product for cleaning the espresso machine.
What is unique about coffee culture in Mexico?
Mexico has a perfect climate for the planting of coffee and due to its very fertile soil is great varieties of coffee can be planted. That is why we have many varieties with an extraordinary quality.
