What Machine Should I Buy for Great Coffee at Home?

A Question I Am Often Asked – “What Machine Should I Buy to Make Great Coffee at Home?”

Being in the coffee cleaner business we are often asked: “What machine should I buy for home. . . ” If that isn’t a complicated question given all the friends and contacts we are fortunate to have in the industry, I don’t know what is. There are so many factors to consider. What kind of coffee do you want to make – filter or espresso? Do you want a pod/capsule machine or more traditional? How many cups do you drink a day?

Let’s assume you’re a traditionalist and just want to brew good old fashioned drip coffee by the pot. Here are some suggestions. I’ll try to address the other possibilities in the future:

1. For starters, don’t worry about the machine immediately. Most drip brewers are just fine if you use a great grinder. Just grinding your beans fresh will make a huge difference in the taste of your coffee. Look for a burr grinder that will create more consistent particle sizes than will a blade grinder.

2. If you still want to upgrade your coffee brewer, look for one that delivers consistent brew temperatures. A good place to find this info is on the website of the machines and looking at reviews from online resellers. One key to a great cup of coffee is that the temperature of the water passing over the coffee is the same throughout the brew process. When the heating elements are higher quality, the machines will be better able to extract the flavor of the coffee.

While we’re not in the business of endorsing one machine over the other, I can share the all Baratza grinders come with a sample of Full Circle Grinder Cleaner. You can also find samples of our Dezcal and Full Circle Descaling powder in Technivorm and Bonavita brewers. There are many great online resources but you might want to stop into a Williams-Sonoma to talk to their staff about which brewer is best for you. While there you can see our entire portfolio of Full Circle Brand cleaners.
