What is the difference between cleaning and descaling?

Cleaning your coffee equipment removes built-up coffee oil residue that accumulates inside your machine. Over time, that residue will cause your coffee to taste bitter. Proper cleaning ensures that your coffee will always taste fresh. If your machine is left alone without cleaning for long enough, coffee residue can cause clogging and blockages that render a machine unusable.

Descaling your coffee equipment removes the mineral buildup that forms on the heating element of all coffee equipment. This buildup prevents the water in your machine from reaching the optimal temperature. At insufficient temperatures, it is impossible to extract the full flavor from your chosen coffee beans/grinds and which will negatively affect the taste of your coffee.
