Ethiopian beans deliver a magical blueberry taste
While cleaning coffee machines doesn’t make us tasting experts, I can share a fun way to have an entirely new coffee experience. Go out and buy a natural*, single origin African coffee. This will be an experience of flavor and aroma you will want to share with friends and family. It will be like tasting your first cup of coffee all over again.
There is nothing more exciting than the blueberry notes that you can find in certain Ethiopian coffees like Harrar and Yirgacheffe. Because of the soil, climate, and processing technique, these coffees have a distinct almost magical blueberry flavor. You will notice the berry aroma before you even grind the beans. Once the coffee is ground the lemony blueberry scent just makes me smile. When it’s finally brewed you will see why coffee is a lot like wine with each origin producing its own distinct profile.
If you’re up for the experience, visit your favorite local coffee retailer and ask the staff for a suggestion. The new crops are arriving right now. I checked with our friends at Coffee Labs Roasters in Tarrytown, NY. It turns out that just this morning they began roasting their newest delivery of Ethiopian Yirgacheffe Gelana Abaya Natural. Kurt, the Head Roaster, explained that it has “really nice blueberry notes, great sweetness, and a light body.” Poke around and look for one of these unusual coffees to change your perspective. Of course, remember to “Keep it Clean.”
Please leave us a comment and tell us what you tried and how it tasted.
* Natural refers to the way the bean is separated from the pulp. In this case, it is done by exposure to the sun rather than with water.
